W9AMR's

Home for wayward transmitters...

BC-5h project

This transmitter was pulled out of  service at Kicks Country 1600am Denver, Colorado.

On a cold snowy Sunday morning in late December KC8OVZ Bill,  Cody and I Loaded up the van and headed  with AA9JC Jeff, KB9GFG Kim, and KB9NZW Jeff to meet John KB9OVB and his truck and trailer in New Carlisle, Indiana. From there we headed west about 45 miles to Michigan City to meet Danny W9DWS to pick up this "monster" at Danny's place. What an adventure!

John KB9OVB and I with the transmitter loaded on his trailer hooked to his truck. Wondering how we all managed to get this thing on there... without "Mongo" this would not have gotten loaded (or unloaded)! Thanks John! We used a wench and a few carefully placed tow straps to pull this beast onto the trailer. I think the slippery snow might have been a good thing!

Here we go...

At this point, all we have to do is load the transformers and we are ready to head back to South Bend. John's truck decided to give him fits on the way back, so the transmitter spent the night at John's house under a tarp. John fixed the issue with the truck the next morning.

Here it sets at the end of the shop Monday night.  It was a lot easier to get off the trailer then we thought.  KC8OVZ, KB9OVB and I managed to get it off the trailer and into the shop by jacking up the front of John's trailer as high as we could and let gravity do most of the work! After we got the transmitter off of the trailer we used 2 X 4's to slide the transmitter into the shop.  AA9JC and his wife showed up to help unload the iron and get it into place within the transmitter.

A view of the back with the iron in place and the panels off.  The big gray thing in the bottom right corner is the modulation transformer. It weights in at about 1000 pounds! That's serious iron! This transmitter was converted to a 10kw transmitter. I have the parts to put it back to stock. It will have to be modified down to legal limit when it is done. The tube lineup is a pair of 3CX2500f3's modulated by a pair of the same. The exciter is a single 4-400c. When it is done it will be a single modulated by a pair.

It's new home...

A side view of the front panels. It barely fits at the end of the shop! I need to make some more room in the shop! It's hard to get to the front of the transmitter for the moment.

Most people would think that the transmitter is overkill. The way I look at it is that it's better to save a piece of history from the land fill. It was destined to be parted out. I am  going to enjoy it's retirement on 160 meters!

Special thanks to: W9DWS,  KB9OVB,  KC8OVZ,  AA9JC and his XYL Lydia,  KB9GFG, KB9NZW and Cody... And last but not least Liz for letting me have another toy...
